The purpose of the study is to examine the use of memorization and recitation in an EFL class. First, this paper discusses the Information-processing theory and related concepts such as short- and long-term memory and rehearsal. In addition, this paper demonstrates how a memorization-recitation activity is conducted. Two examples are given to illustrate how memorization-and-recitation activities are carried out in the classroom. Moreover, it is emphasized that the teacher can help students by repeating and asking questions, and correcting pronunciation in a recitation activity. The teacher should focus on fluency in the class while the student should focus on accuracy during preparation. Students' feedback shows that students are satisfactory with the outcome of the memorization and recitation exercise conducted in this study. Finally, a tentative model of memorization and recitation in EFL teaching is proposed. This paper concludes that memorization-recitation involves more than just rote memorization. It is an integration of cognitive and linguistic activity as well as a technique that can be nicely adapted into an EFL class setting.
