Pain and evil are inevitable in life. Evil is first and foremost a fact that needs to be contended with. Here we will be taking the story of a Christian woman's suffering when her son was killed, in a rural area in North China, as a case study, and in this article we will be analyzing and discussing how Christians face, and pass through, great suffering. We will be looking at this specific social and cultural situation from the three dimensions of sin, justice and community. As the woman in question, Lijie, practiced her faith in her suffering, this can be seen as a redeeming way to respond to suffering from the perspective of the other, while also appealing to justice in the public domain. This "transcendent" experience in suffering not only helps her to face her suffering, but also helps her to renew her individual self and to further strengthen her faith identity, and as a "trace" and "witness". This together with her hope for eternity, provides her with the hope to continue to face her present suffering.
