Reformation of monastic codes is part of Humanistic Buddhism advocated by Buddhist leaders such as Taixu, Yingshun, Xingyun and Shenyan, yet few studies of this kind have been carried out. The present work, through textual studies and hermeneutic analysis, examines the form and content of monastic codes to highlight the spirit and function of vinaya, and to demonstrate its humanistic nature and beneficial value for the religious cultivation of the sangha and its connections with society.
