Images: Ectopic Lingual Thyroid with Neck Lump Sensation

摘要

A 32-year-old female complained neck lump sensation, dysphagia and difficult breathing for a period of time. She denied hand tremor, body weight change, irregular menstrual cycle or significant familial history. Neck examination didn't reveal any palpable masses. The laryngoscope demonstrated a reddish bulging mass lesion in the tongue base with smooth surface (Fig. 1). Thyroid function tests were within normal limits. Thyroid ultrasonography revealed the absence of thyroid glands. Technetium (Tc99m) thyroid scan showed non-visualization of bilateral thyroid glands in the thyroid bed but increased radioactivity in the midline tongue base (Fig. 2). It consisted with ectopic thyroid gland in the midline tongue base. She received suppression treatment of thyroxin hormone first and then received elective surgical resection of the gland. Levothyroxine was given in postoperative period.
