The motif of the thesis is to clarify the action, purpose, and the outcome of the continental policy by giving a retrospect on the concept of “continent” developing in Japan, to see how the outcome impacting Japan’s Oriental concept since the late Shogunate era. Also, the thesis would try to explain how Japanese nation use the ideas of Asianism to implement their strategy to forming an ally with their neighboring nations to defend the Orient, which was also the incentive for Japanese to maintain their rights in the area. In this procedure, we are also able to see how the process of desinicization impacted the formation of Japanese nation, and becoming the center of the field in the Orient. In contrary, the process of China becoming the external in the field also impacts the implement of Japan’s continental policy.
