The vibration of structures under the effect of external forces such as wind load, human load, earthquake, etc… is usually a serious problem when concerning the safety of the structure and occupant comfort. In order to reduce the discomfort induced by vibration, one of the approaches that have been widely used in structures is Tuned Mass Damper (TMD). However, the optimization of design variables for tuned mass dampers is very significant. There are some accurate theories for undamped single-degree-of freedom structure or some closed form solutions for multiply-degree-of freedom structure, and simplified structure as concentrated mass system. In fact, most of the approximate theories are impossible in applying for all kinds of structures, especially when dealing with the case of special variables and complicated structures. Thus, the purpose of this research is to develop comprehensively an optimized design system by combining mathematical analysis software MATLAB with finite element software ABAQUS and using the Optimal Tool Function FMINCON to finding the optimized properties of TMD for special requirement. In main content, the first part is to review the theory and equation of motion for the structure with different type of TMDs or system with different degree of freedom (DOF). The transfer function is always used when analyzing the response of system with TMD in the frequency domain. After that, introduce the design variables of TMD, for example, mass ratio, damping ratio, tuning frequency ratio and any other necessary variable. Next, introduce the objective function of TMD design problem. The root mean square of response or the peak value of response in frequency domain is often chosen. Part four introduces the function of software used in this study and the optimization design architecture. The overall system is divided into three parts, namely data processing module, finite element analysis module, optimization analysis module; each module is responsible for the work of the program. Part five is the use of the analytical framework for doing the optimal analysis with different types of TMDs. Firstly, a single degree of freedom (SDOF) system is introduced and the results between theory and program are compared to ensure that the content of this study is feasible. Secondly, do some change to the objective function, design variables, the form of the main system, and the type of TMD design, to determine optimal TMD. Finally, compare the results and estimate the application for each type of TMD.
