Blind eye -A Study on Dynamic Build of Visual Camouflage

Under the backdrop of globalization, modernism with excessive emphasis on personality and expression actually becomes a destructive element to natural scenery, landscape textures, and urban contexts. Blind Eye, to emphasize the integration of architecture and the environment, creates an idea based on imagination brought by digital technologies and reflects the relation between architecture or space and the environment in the information era. Therefore, this study explores biological camouflage mechanisms and combines parameterization and operation mechanisms with reproduction to reconstruct a new space interface between architecture and the environment: Blind Eye. For the purpose, we start to build the theoretical foundation with literature reviews and case studies, and then work on theories and practices through the following three steps: (1) biological camouflage pattern transformation: convert biological camouflage mechanism into parameterized texture or graphics with parameterization software (such as Grasshopper, Firefly); (2) research on the operation mechanism of movement and interaction: construct an interactive camouflage building unit through the exploration of joint movement, structure, and materials with computing software (such as Arduino) and hardware (such as Kinect); and (3) design experiment simulation: simulate and understand the design through an experiment on practical 1:1 interactive building unit combined with mobile exhibition space and dynamic skin design. This study provides a dialogue, such as merging and performance, between architecture and the environment at different spatial scales (such as skins or installations) and status (dynamic or static) as interactive building units. This is realized by combining biological camouflage pattern transformation and operation in the following four modes: dimension movement, distance and depth, texture change, and dynamic change. In our future studies, we will continue working on the camouflage pattern “color transformation” and its operational mechanism, as well as exploring its materials and forms to construct a more comprehensive interactive building unit. Related discussions and discoveries are detailed in this thesis book.
