Gender Binarism in Radclyffe Hall’s The Well of Loneliness

The thesis aims to investigate the lesbian identity and the oppression of gender binarism on the protagonist Stephen Gordon in The Well of Loneliness. In the thesis, in dealing with her lesbian identity, Stephen Gordon faces the process in which all human beings try to search the gender identity. I try to offer a study from the perspective of feminism to inspect Stephen’s searching of gender identity. The first chapter of the thesis examines how Stephen’s mother becomes the oppressor and the oppressed under hegemonic patriarchy. Julia Kristeva’s theory of abjection helps to analyze the strangeness and obscenity of heterosexual society and the loneliness and solitude of Stephen. Chapter Two utilizes Judith Butler’s concept of gender performitivity to inspect Stephen Gordon and Mary’s gender performitivity. With Monique Wittig’s lesbianism in her One is Not Born a Woman, this chapter explores how heterosexism enslaves Stephen. In Chapter Three, Cixious’ theory of woman writing in “The Laugh of the Medusa” would be taken as the theoretical framework to represent the strength given through Stephen’s writing. Adrianne Rich’s lesbian existence would analyze the female bonding of different female characters. In the conclusion, Heather K. Love in her “Spoiled Identity: Stephen Gordon’s Loneliness and the Difficulties of Queer History”, shares her point of view on Stephen’s melancholia in order to explore the deconstruction of self in the end of novel. To sum up, this thesis attempts to reveal Stephen’s deconstruction of self-identity and to convey the loneliness under gender binarism. Beyond Stephen’s loneliness and melancholia, the thesis is not only to analyze the characters by feminism perspectives, but rather, to follow Stephen’s struggles and we are able to face the difficulties and dilemma in our lives.
