This study evaluates the effectiveness of a spring balancer use in reducing workload of screwing tasks using an electric screwdriver. In addition, this study simulates screwing tasks of different operation conditions to assess the corresponding objective and subjective physical workloads of each task and to compare the assessment outcome of upper-limb risks of musculoskeletal hazard by using HAL-TLV and OCRA index tool. Subjects EMG, ECG, and Borg CR-10 were measured as quantitative indices of workloads. The Experimental results showed no significant improvement in Borg and heart rate by using a spring balancer, but significant EMG effect was found in subjects wrist ulnar flexor, biceps, and triceps muscles. Experimental results show that risk indices of HAL-TLV and OCRA index are highly correlated. Both tools have good predictability on objective and subjective workloads. However, HAL-TLV tends to predict a lower hazard level than OCRA index does.
