The author conducts a longitudinal study on the education of national identification in Taiwan’s elementary school textbooks with a special focus on the part of “Understanding Taiwan’s Society.” By adopting the theoretical framework of Benedict Andersen’s “imagined political communities,” the author has engaged in text and content analysis and finds that there has been a significant evolution in Taiwan’s national identification education in Taiwan’s elementary school textbooks in the past three decades since the deregulation of textbook publications.
