How does a Chair Establish Positive Rapport in Three Multi-cultural Business Meetings?

With the competitive global marketplace, it has become increasingly important for the business professionals to be equipped with the ability to manage rapport in ELF business communication. In the field of English for Business Purposes (EBP), the research on rapport management in spoken business discourse has been of interest to more and more researchers (e.g., Campbell & Davis, 2008; Planken, 2005; Spencer-Oatey & Xing, 1998, 2003). However, until present, it seems that none of them have ever focused on how a new business relationship is established in multicultural business meetings through rapport management. Moreover, little attention has been specifically paid to the discourse produced by the chair in the business meeting. Therefore, based on Spencer-Oatey’s (2000, 2008) rapport management model, the present study aims to investigate two rapport-building strategies (i.e., compliment and humor) used by a Taiwanese chair in three multi-cultural business meetings held in Taiwan. In addition to the discourse analysis, in-depth discourse-based interviews with the chair were also conducted to verify the interpretation and to further obtain elaborated information on the use of these two strategies. The results show that the chair studied in this thesis uses compliment and humor to establish three interrelated layers of rapport: (1) the whole-group layer (i.e., solidarity among all the project members), (2) the sub-group layer (i.e., rapport between/among specific sub-groups involved in the project), and (3) the individual layer (i.e., rapport between the chair and individual participants). It is found that, when complimenting or giving humorous remarks to the participants, this chair not only attempted to establish the rapport between himself and certain individual participant(s) but also to make the other participants more familiar with them in the group level, hence enhance the positive rapport among all the participants in the project.
