Engaging potential helpers in question resolving with a networked discussion forum

Engaging potential helpers in question resolving with a networked discussion forum

指導教授 : 賴國華

摘要

In recent years, universities are able to provide online courseware by carrying out virtual learning environments. Learning through the virtual environment requires self-regulation so that students are motivated to adopt self-regulatory strategies to improve their knowledge. Help-seeking is a good strategy in self-regulation learning. However, many students fail when they seek the help during the learning process. Due to the requirements of supporting help seeking behaviors, we build a web-based learning system and engage potential helpers in the question resolving process. The system suggests students engaging helpers and inviting them to help. This mechanism can enhance collaboration between help seekers and helpers via the online environment. Based on the helper inviting mechanism, we examine the change of students on participation and question resolving behavior in online discussion forums. When using the system, students can: (1) select the slide and mark confused regions, then pose the question in the discussion forum; (2) invite experts and friends to help in resolving problems by directly sending an email; (3) follow and monitor the posted questions during the process; and (4) evaluate the best responses of each question, save them into their personal notes. From the system, students can seek helps more conveniently.
