This study is based on the art educational activity series, Event Horizon–Art Creation by Non-Visual Art Exploration, held at the Hong-gah Museum. This study discusses how the museum combined art educational techniques to create artwork that would engage the visually impaired people through their non-visual senses. This study also investigates how the museum can take a more active role in the visually impaired people’s art education in their learning process. Moreover, as a social education institution, this study will make some suggestions to the museum on how it can provide more information and expand its services to visually impaired people. This study employs phenomenology as a research approach. Through Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s Phenomenology of Perception, this study also explores how the visually impaired people generate their pictorial perception, by using their body’s perception to sense their space and environment by relying on their other senses. This study reviews the body perception and the pictorial perception researches and investigates the actual reality about the art education for the visually impaired people. Furthermore, with this in mind, the researcher considers the museum as an informal educational institution and how it complements the inadequate learning of art education in our school systems for the visually impaired people, in order to provide a more friendly and accessible learning environment. For the research method, this study mainly uses participant observation, qualitative interviews to collect and analyze. It discusses during the non-visual creation activity and how visual impaired people can transform the relationship between self-expression and the relationship with other people by the creation of art as the connecting media. Through this study, the researcher hopes to call attention from the public to the art education for the blind, the value of the extended sense experiences besides the visual, as well as to stimulate them to overcome their visual restriction, showing their value by their art creation.
