Cultural Implication, Experience Transformation, and Design Thinking: A Case Study of Product Design in Museum Goods

This study aims to examine the cultural implications and the transfers of experiences of museum goods. The author argued that museum goods are characterized with experience and further extended into the experiences of visiting museums. As a result, the product design with an orientation towards experiences allows to construct varying types of museum goods. Based on the interviews, this study also identities similarities and differences between museum professionals and designers with regard to the ways that the design of museum goods transfers the experiences of visiting the museum. This study examines whether the transfers of experiences in museum goods have ideal types, either in empirical cases or in theoretical concepts, by comparing museum goods. The author argued that the types of museums play a role in determining the development and selection of museum goods. Art museums, history museums, and science museums have qualitatively distinctions in the development of museum goods, depending on the elements of designing, such as symbol, quality, story, and function that are embedded with the positioning and collection of museums. Furthermore, the extent of education function that varying museums want to act and the capacity of cooperating with local industries are different among museums. Therefore, the levels of experience transfers and meanings vary by the types of museums. Finally, the study addresses limitations and suggestions in professional practice. Proposed principles for selecting museums goods help museums without designers for museums goods extend the experiences of visiting and enrich the diversity of museum goods by actively selecting museums goods in the regular commercial market. The principles also serve to suggestions on the development of museum shops in Taiwan.
