Most of the Fengshui studies stay within the parameter of academic discourse. Rarely would one step into the realm of “technical maneuver.” A gap, as a result, has been formed between theory and practice to prevent further development of the studies. To make up for this shortcoming, this paper attempts to delve into the subject of operation and implementation of Fengshui, beginning with the “water method.” Through literature review and operational process analysis, it applies the “water method” it established through the deduction to field survey and compares it with the “courtyard” drainage system of traditional residence in order to verify the similarity and difference and integrate theory and practice. The operational framework of the water method established for this study can be divided into Five Phases, Twelve Races, the Dipper (the Tanlang terms) – all together 4 categories and 18 items. Though the operational purposes of different approaches are different, the drainage principles are similar – all are based on the doctrine of “collecting water from the blessing side and drainage on the evil side.” There are 3 water methods suitable for yard drainage analysis. Among them, the outcome of the comparison between the San-Shen Water Method and field survey data is most desirable. It is largely in line with the drainage doctrine recorded in the “Eight Aspects for Creating Blessedness for the Residence,” a writing from the Ming Dynasty.
