This thesis examines the development of the Puli (Nantou County, central Taiwan) during the period of Qing colonial governance over Taiwan. It does so by considering a number of key changes that took place at that time, including population growth, economic development, transportation networks, and overall quality of life. On the one hand, my research focuses on Puli from the perspective of “place”, with special emphasis placed on characteristics of and limitations imposed by the local environment. On the other hand, it also stresses the importance of “people”, especially the key roles played by local elites. Sorting out the cultural landscape of Puli area. this thesis draws on a case study of Da Pu City to analyze this locale’s patterns of marriage and adoption, and well as local networks and interaction between different ethnic and sub-ethnic groups.
