The University History Museum as the Public Sphere of Campus Community

Museums claiming for existence are often justified on the grounds of the public and democracy. This means that there are links between museums and generalized bodies of people (audiences, represented communities, and stakeholders). However, museum administrators often lack awareness about the political meaning of the public and democracy. This paper discusses imagined communities and public sphere. The image of community comes from elements that members share with each other. In a modern democratic society, communities should include many members and their diverse ideas and actions rather than manipulate certain elements through the public authorities. Because members believe that they have their own community, they can implement the power of sovereignty and act equally in the public sphere. Also, this paper reviews the development of public museums and university museums and explores what museums do for the public. The author participated in curating the university history museum in the Taipei National University of the Arts and studied how to curate exhibitions and operate social media for campus member involvement to implement publicness. University history museums should include many members and their diverse ideas and actions for representing their images of campus communities. This paper depicts how campus members visualize their own communities and university history (museums). Furthermore, it discusses the author’s activities at the University History Affairs Section (Taipei National University of the Arts Library) to respond to campus members’ image of the campus community and implement the publicness of the university history museum. Each campus member visualizes community in his or her own way; therefore, university history museums should include these diverse experiences rather than only certain symbolic elements.
