Brick, a unique material with many characteristics, has been used in the Taiwan's traditional architecture for over a hundred years. It has the quality of elegance, class and warmth. In the architecture, we often see the brick being carved into a decorative piece. Most of the traditional Taiwanese brick-craving artwork can be seen in people’s houses, Ancestral shrines, academy and the temples of Confucius. It is especially evident that the artwork in the academy and the Confucius's temples truly reveals the sense of beauty, knowledge and wisdom among the scholars in the old days. From all the field studies I did to get the first-hand information throughout Taiwan traditional architecture. For the purpose of discussion, brick-carving materials, tools, techniques are not the focus of my studies. My analysis will be presented with the support of historical documents and cross-referenced by the Chinese iconic arts, graphic design, symbolism and cultural anthropology. The main discussion of this study is the production era of the brick carving art, the specific arrangement and placement of the art piece on the building, and the meaning of the symbols on the carved work. Most importantly, I would like to express how the traditional sense of beauty has reflected the society of the time; more specifically, how brick-carving iconic decorative artwork interlocks with the ancient scholars' society and as well as its cultural value and spirit. To fully understand the traditional Taiwanese brick-carving art, future field studies need to conducted in the entire Taiwan, Peng-Hu, Jin-Men. I sincerely hope that with its rich background of history, geographical influence, and culture, the Taiwanese brick-carving tradition can regain its social recognition such that the preserved historical architecture can be, once again, rejuvanated and further developed and included in today's technologically advanced society.
