Giuseppe Martucci (1856-1909) was an Italian composer, conductor and pianist. He was an important composer in late 19th-century Italy. With the prevalence of opera in 19th century, Martucci, who was influenced by Austro-German traditions, determined to revive non-operatic music in Italy. He not only never wrote an opera, but also introduced excellent instrumental music, such as the works of L. van Beethoven, R. Schumann, J. Brahms and R. Wagner etc., to his country as a conductor. As for the Orchestra Napoletana which was single-handedly established by him, was even highly recognized by music critics as the top symphony orchestra in Italy. The faith of Martucci to stand up for non-operatic music not only expanded the vision of traditional Italian music, his works also had significant impact on his student O. Respighi and conductor A. Toscanini. Martucci can be seen as the pioneer of Italian modern music history. This thesis will firstly address the background of Martucci's time to explore European Romanticism and the development of Italian society and arts in the 19th century. It will then focus on Martucci's only song cycle La canzone deiricordi to interpret the singing and analyze the work to pay tribute to this Italian master of non-operatic music.
