以目的論評析當代台灣文學英譯之作品

摘要

近年來，台灣文化透過音樂、戲劇、電影等方式成功行銷，使外國人有機會認識台灣，並在觀光上面帶來很大的助益，不過藉由這種方式畢竟只能呈現台灣文化的冰山一角，要更全面地了解台灣這一塊土地，必須由文學作品著手，從不同的角度與面向來細細觀察。
把台灣文學推上國際，翻譯是必要的工具；翻譯工作是原語作者與譯語讀者之間交際過程的一部分；而翻譯目的則決定了譯者在翻譯過程中所用的策略、技巧與方法。本論文的研究素材為《中英對照讀台灣小說》一書中的四篇小說英譯版，其中兩篇由外國人（母語為英語者）翻譯，兩篇由本國人翻譯，筆者根據目的論者諾德的「功能加忠誠理論」做翻譯評析，同時以其所提之「翻譯的功能類型」與「翻譯問題分類」為輔，探討譯者在處理原文時是否考慮到原文作者、譯文讀者或譯者之委託人之目的，以及翻譯過程中是否考量到原文與譯文中所涉及的文化背景及思考模式之差異，並依據此來探討譯者的翻譯策略與方法。
研究結果發現，中譯英過程中，譯者所用策略以編譯、釋譯為主，增譯為輔，其中外國譯者多採用編譯，本國譯者多採用釋譯；遇文化相關詞彙之轉換，則多採用歸化策略。

For the past years, Taiwan literature has been successfully introduced to foreigners with music, dramas, movies, and so on. People in other country learn more about Taiwan and have been attracted to come to Taiwan. However, what music, dramas and movies can show is only a little of Taiwan.
To know Taiwan more comprehensively, literature is the best to begin with and it’s the best place where people can explore in various aspects. Translation is a requisite to promote Taiwan literature internationally, and it constructs a part of the communication between the writer and the reader of the translated text. The aim of translation significantly determines the translator’s strategies, skills and methods. The thesis looks into the English version of four novels of Taiwan Literature in Chinese and English, two of them translated by the foreign translators and the others by the native ones, from the perspective of Christiane Nord, whose theory is concerned with translation functions, typology and faithfulness. The aims of the writer, the client, and the reader of the translated text have also been taken into account. How the translator deals with cultural differences and what strategies the translator uses is also
explored.
The results show that all translators in this research use adaptation and explanation as primary and addition as secondary strategies. The foreign translators use more adaptation and the native translators use more explanation. In dealing with transfer of cultural words and phrases, all
translators adopt more domesticating translation strategy.
