To translate Chinese ISO procedures into English has become more and more important in recent years because it is a key feature for Taiwanese companies to attract foreign customers. However, previous studies have failed to discover that the text types of Chinese and English ISO procedures are different. Therefore, the text type and the writing style of English or translated ISO procedures should be different from those of Chinese ones. Lamentably, they have remained the same in most translations because the differences are ignored, resulting in the translated procedures nonconforming to the requirements of foreign ISO experts. Moreover, many Chinese ISO procedures are usually written by non-professional writers, so the writing of the procedures is usually unintelligible, a common problem that translators encounter. This thesis has adopted Peter Newmark’s principle of communicative translation to analyze the translations of ten ISO procedures related to the optoelectronic industry. The results showed that these translations following the communicative translation strategy can faithfully convey the content of the original, obey the prescribed text type and writing style, and make the translation clearer than the original Chinese text. Furthermore, this thesis discussed Newmark’s translation techniques applied to the ISO procedure translations and provided typical examples for future reference.
