Abstract The crisscrossing streets of residential cities are the mediums that to receive and carry on history and culture, and the conditional mould of daily life emerges from the inherent structural style of architecture and space. Interpersonal meetings and contacts are mutually produced simultaneously; therefore, several types of public spaces are established for public relations, which supply the conditions for the occurrence of scenic areas and opportunities. Public bathhouse is one of these places. Since ancient times, public bathhouses have been a constant feature of public life. Through the passing of time, the form, shape, and meeting styles have been changed; however, the intrinsic spirits of the medium that to receive and carry on have not faded away. Public style bathhouses with different shapes and styles are still being produced inside the country. Bathing, chatting, communicating, and developing social groups are most splendid and lively in the scenic settings of public hot-spring bathhouses. The public style and spirit are also manifested within this process. The design of this thesis takes the condition of public bathhouses as its starting point. From this theme for public discussions then cuts into an observation of the occurrence of the public spirit in public bathhouses and transforms into an explanation of the public spirit in reconstructed bathhouses. The first chapter of this thesis explains the research framework and discusses the method of design. The second chapter investigates the composition and form of the individual and social groups as well as the creation of public styles. It also investigates the established contact of public life, public relations, and public spaces. The third chapter specially views the transformation and shifting molds of public bathhouses in history. From the lines of public life in each age, it seeks the position and level of public bathhouses. It then ponders the molding of the public style and spirit of public areas through an analysis of the form and condition of space. The fourth chapter takes public hot-spring baths as its core and from the functions, mold and condition of space, and lines of Taiwan’s hot-spring culture, ponders each type of facet hidden behind public hot-spring baths. Moreover, it discusses the public meaning of the role and molded space of public hot-spring baths. The fifth and final chapter takes the discussion topic, public style, and viewpoint transformation as its design concept. Moreover it takes the design of Lanshuikan Bathhouse as an example of the practice of space operation, and then discusses the latent potential and probability of reconstructed bathhouses and the public spirit.
