The purpose of this study was the development and application of two-tier diagnostic assessment of the concepts on earth and outer space of the sixth grade. The sample of this study consisted of 606 6th grades selected from six elementary schools of Taoyuan, Taiwan, R. O. C. In order to develop the diagnostic assessment, it was necessary to gather and analyze the literatures about the misconceptions and error patterns on earth and outer space. In addition, open-ended interview was used to collect every kind of misconceptions and error patterns on earth and outer space. After pilot testing, the two-tier diagnostic assessment instrument-“Two-Tier Diagnostic Test for Earth and Outer Space” (TTDTEOS) was developed. In order to identify the misconceptions and error patterns on earth and outer space that were hold by students, some students were interviewed. The internal consistent coefficient (cronbach α) of TTDTEOS was 0.70. The average item difficulty index and the item discrimination index was 0.41 and 0.43 respectively. According to analysis of the students’ answers on the TTDTEOS, there were some misconceptions about the definition of students have misconceptions about lunar phases, the causes of lunar phases, the period of lunar phases and Earth-Sun-Moon relationships、 the rotation of the earth、the revolution around the sun、the rotation of the earth & the revolution around the sun & the axis tilting in revolution. The students have difficulties in learning the conception of earth and outer space. The results of the study will help teachers to realize the learning of elementary school students on earth and outer space of the sixth grade, and provided references for teachers when teaching of earth and outer space.
