針對以英語為外語的學習者使用語料庫輔助英語同義字教學之影響與成效研究

An Investigation of Employing Corpora in Teaching English Synonyms to EFL College Students

摘要


此研究的目的為探討使用語料庫輔助英語同義字教學的成效及影響,研究對象為非語言相關科系的台灣學習者,研究者將研究對象分為實驗組及對照組,進一步比較傳統教學法與使用語料庫教學的成果。在兩次實驗中,分別進行前測與後測,並以測驗的成績作為了解學生程度及其進步幅度的依據。研究者以其研究對象在該學期英文課中學過的詞彙為主,設計出前後測的試題以及課程所使用的教材。在兩次測驗之間,分別加入不同的課程;針對實驗組,研究者利用語料庫上的資源,整理出試卷上同義字常見的搭配詞和句子,並設計教學投影片於課堂中使用。然而針對對照組,研究者所使用的教材是根據傳統教學的概念,擷取參考書上的內容並展示在教學投影片上。在課堂的最後,研究者利用問卷調查其研究對象對於此兩種教學的看法和態度,並透過資料分析做進一步的檢討。 透過以上資料收集與分析,本研究結果顯示利用語料庫資源設計的課程和教材比傳統教學來得更有效益。尤其在第二輪的實驗結果中,實驗組的進步幅度明顯較高,該組後測的標準偏差,也明顯比前測低了許多。此外,根據問卷的結果分析,有百分之七十六的受試者認為若能結合傳統教學和語料庫教學,將兩種教材合而為一,英語同義字的學習將得到更有利的幫助。本研究的結論指出,未來進一步的研究可以以結合兩種教學為方向,並將進行實驗的時間延長。如此一來,實驗結果必將更具效度,也能為英語教學的學術領域帶來可觀的貢獻。

This study aimed at exploring the effect of employing corpora in teaching English synonyms to college students in Taiwan. It concentrated on the vocabulary that had once been taught to the students, surveying to what degree the students can understand the differences between several pairs of synonyms. The researcher conducted two rounds of one-shot treatments, and the participants were two groups of college freshmen with similar English proficiency. Between the two groups, one of them was the controlled group, which received lessons based on traditional approaches; the other one was the experiment group, which was taught with corpus-related teaching materials. There were pretests and post-tests before and after the lessons. After calculating the students’ scores on the both tests, the researcher applied SPSS to analyze the data she collected from the experiments. With independent t-test, the researcher was able to compare the performances of the controlled group with those of the experiment one. The results showed that comparing to the performances of the testees in the controlled group, teaching with corpus resources can be more beneficial for the learners to absorb the knowledge of English synonyms. It was convinced that the application of the corpus-related teaching method offers EFL teachers a novel way to teach English vocabulary as well as synonymous words. Moreover, there were more than half of the students thought that it would be better to combine both the traditional way and the method that incorporates corpus resources with when the instructor gives lessons on English synonyms. For future researches, it is suggested that researchers should extending their experiments and refining the teaching materials, which are expected to contain both traditional materials and the ones that incorporate corpora with. Thus, the results of the further studies and the contributions they would bring about are believed to be convincible and valuable.
