The purpose of this research was to investigate the relationship between gratitude and stress response in performance settings. Study 1 was the development of the Short Stress State Questionnaire (Chinese Version) with a sample of 205 participants recruited from the internet. Results indicated that this instrument had satisfactory reliability and validity. In study 2, a 2 x 2 between-participant experimental design was used in a sample of 119 participants. The participants were assigned into two groups by Gratitude Questionnaire (GQ) scores: high-gratitude group and low-gratitude group. There were two kinds of task demands: high task demands and low task demands. The dependent variables were the three factors of the Short Stress State Questionnaire (Chinese Version). Results indicated that the main effect of gratitude on task engagement and the interaction of gratitude and task demand on anxiety were statistically significant. The implications of these results were also discussed.
