Abstract It is not until the last decade that white light LEDs are considered possible light source for task lighting, reading, and ambient lighting. Such products are manufactured mainly due to LEDs’ energy saving feature. Unfortunately they are incomparable to tungsten, halogen, and fluorescent laps in the sense of color rendering index, skin tone, and light distribution pattern since the beams emitted from LEDs are different spectrally. People are reluctant to accept this type of light for such a visual related shortcoming. Although made for lighting purposes, they are not widely used nor are they appropriately adopted. Thus, this research collected sample lamps to learn how people view such a light source and what parameters pertain to their preferences. To do so, respondents are invited to observe and fill out questionnaires on display windows where 14 lamp samples are mounted. The collected data are statistically processed to obtain mean value and T tests scores. Further, Multidimensional Preference Scaling program is employed to generate Perceptual Mapping of respondents’ visual preferences. It is concluded first, that people would accept 6500K white light LEDs as an interior light source; they dislike skin tone under 5000K white light LEDs, yet they take to color appearance of objects under 6500K light beams. Second, the two-dimensional perceptual mapping is appropriate to interpret respondents’ visual preference for specific white light LEDs. Third, there is no gender difference found in such a preference pattern. Finally, it can be certain that color rendering indices of LED light sources are irrelevant to respondents’ preferences.
