中文摘要 本論文主在探究情色小說《O孃的故事》裡女性角色是否如小說擁護者所宣稱的那麼具有自主性、並參照德籍新馬克斯主義學派學者赫伯特•馬庫色在《單向度的人：發達工業社會意識型態研究》中所提供之主宰者被統治者的互動模式，對O孃的故事》進行文本研究。 第一章主要為小說簡介，並介紹對於《O孃的故事》為情色小說的各種正反面評論、以及藝文界對小說作者身分以及性別的各種揣測及推論。第二章引進馬庫色在《單向度的人》一書中非常重要的觀念，亦即「錯誤意識」，他認為在一個單向度的社會中，「錯誤意識」為統治階層控管一切的基本洗腦手法；此外本章並且嘗試說明小說女主角O在同意接受任何受虐性要求的配合背後就是其「錯誤意識」的運作結果。第三章主要在探討女主角在不斷出讓自主權的同時慢慢失去其身為「人」的特性、並漸漸退化成「物」的過程。除此之外我還針對本小說中其他的女性角色進行探討，並試圖證明她們存在的意義也只不過是O的翻版。然而在第四章中，我首先引出研究馬庫色的學者在解讀馬庫色的理論時，對於勢力單薄的個人在處於單向度社會中仍然具有突破現狀的潛力表達了相當程度的樂觀；而馬庫色本人提出的解決方式即是從意識的突破及創新著手。最後我將進而在小說中尋找具有這樣潛力的女性角色，並舉例說明她的確具備多向度思考的特性，從而希冀為《O孃的故事》中對被統治者的受壓迫狀態找到一條出路。

Abstract In this thesis, I am determined to prove that the female characters in Story of O are not so autonomous as the supporters of the novel have claimed them to be. Therefore, I turn to Herbert Marcuse’s One-Dimensional Man: Study in the Ideology of Advanced Industrial Society for theoretical help and carry out the textual study of this erotic novel. The first chapter of this thesis begins with a brief introduction to the novel, the literary criticism for and against Story of O, and the debate over the gender of its author. Then in the beginning of the second chapter, I try to explain the reason why my argument is based upon Marcuse’s ideas and bring in Marcuse’s concept of “false needs,” which is believed by Marcuse to be the way an one-dimensional society controls its people. I believe O is somehow a victim of need-falsification. The third chapter focuses on the objectification of the heroine when she is gradually giving away her autonomy and individuality. Worst of all, the other female characters (excluding one) are only copies of O. It seems that there is no hope for female characters not to conform to the one-dimensionalizing power. However, in the fourth chapter of my thesis, since Marcuse is optimistic about the liberating potentiality within an one-dimensional society, I am trying to show that there is still one character who possesses such quality and represents a possible way to stay out of the repression in Story of O.
