The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the various roles of
'REN JIA' (人家） in Mandarin Chinese. 'REN JIA' will be interpreted and analyzed from phonetic, syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, discourse and rhetorical aspects. The research will explore related issues including the multiple and varied uses of 'REN JIA', the functions of which in written discourses, and circumstances that motivate their occurrence.
