This thesis is a study on word-image relationships in contemporary Taiwanese art. This study is concerned with what happens when two seemingly distinct modes of human communication, the written and pictorial, are combined, when actual written texts in Chinese (word) appear in works of art (image) created by Taiwanese artists. The main purpose of this research was to introduce thematic groupings of the thoroughly selected examples of the contemporary Chinese language-based artworks to discuss and analyze the various ways in which artists in Taiwan have used written Chinese language in visual art. This thesis adapted a qualitative research approach based on the case study of the permanent collection of the Taipei Fine Arts Museum (1983-2016) and used qualitative content analysis as data collection method. Based on the visual material analysis and literature review, the findings of this study were arranged in three loose categories: The Image Supplemented by Chinese Characters, Chinese Characters Supplemented by the Image, and The Equal Importance of the Image and Chinese Characters. These categories were designed to show the diversity of word-image combinations as they appear in various art forms (paintings, prints, mixed media works, etc.). Last but not least, this study allowed to show that artists in Taiwan have used Chinese language in combination with visual portrayals as a tool to criticize, satirize or bring attention to the prevailing issues in the country, as well as to express their thoughts and feelings toward personal or societal problems.
