Do Mothers Matter More?The Adolescent’s Academic Performance in Single Father and Mother Families

摘要

一般來說，父親與母親在家庭結構中各自扮演不同的角色，父親較將心力投入在工作而非家庭，母親則平均較常扮演照顧子女的主要角色，使得母親比父親更瞭解子女的生活狀況，因此單親父親和單親母親的子女在教育表現上也會受到不同的影響嗎？由於國外文獻已經針對相關議題做過不少探討，本文將以國內相關的研究作參考和對照。使用「台灣教育長期追蹤資料庫」(TEPS)於2001年蒐集之國中一年級學生的樣本，來探討單親父親與單親母親對子女的教育影響。本文的主要發現有：首先，提升經濟能力是幫助單親母親的子女在教育表現的關鍵因素；第二，家長愈常與子女談論課業狀況以及陪伴子女等行為，相較於單親母親，對單親父親的子女在教育表現上有更大的正面影響。
研究也發現，子女會隨著在不同的單親家庭中，教育表現也會受到不同的影響。四種單親家庭結構中，以喪偶單親母親的子女在教育表現上最好，離婚單親父親的子女則在教育表現上最低。

This study uses TEPS (Taiwan Education Panel Survey) “Wave-1 student and parent questionnaire” to explore whether the parent’s effects on adolescent academic performance are different between single father and single mother families. Results show that (1) when other effects are constant (gender, parents’ education), the association of family income and adolescent’s academic performance is positive in single mother families, but the result is not available in single father families; (2) the effects of involvement in adolescent’s schoolwork and accompanying are bigger which are observed in single father families than which are observed in single mother families.
This study also shows that, the difference of impact between adolescent's academic performance and different single families. The adolescent’s academic performance of single father is worse than whom of single mother, especially, the adolescent of divorced single father is worst in academic performance.
