Online relationships, which have attracted lots of attentions from researchers, are interpersonal relationships formed and maintained on the Internet. Recent evidences have suggested that several social issues such as deception, online infidelity, and even disease infection may be caused since the virtual relationships have already extended into the real social life. Although online relationships has been increasing sharply over the past few years, there are only few attempts have so far been made at users’ intentions to participate in online relationships. In the context of rapid development of information technology, high penetration rate of Internet, and affordable Internet connection cost, the behavioral intentions and the influence factors of online relationship activities should be discussed and explained. The present research attempts to investigate users’ behavioral intentions to participate in online friendship and Internet one-night stand. Based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB), this study examined the influence of attitude towards online relationship, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, perceived risk, and behavioral intention. Two controversial activities, online friendship and Internet one-night stand, were both explored with the factors mentioned above. Moreover, actual experiences of online relationships were observed in the empirical study. In total, 698 subjects were collected for empirical analysis. Cluster analysis was applied and revealed that there were three main kinds of opinions about online friendship: ‘Accept to Online Friendship’, ‘Low Perceived Controllability’, ‘High Perceived Controllability’ and Internet one-night stand: ‘Accept to One-night Stand’, ‘Low Perceived Controllability’, ‘High Perceived Controllability’. Statistically significant differences between each cluster were examined through ANOVA. To verify the research model, SEM was adopted and revealed partially supported of the hypotheses. In online friendship, the primary determinant of behavioral intention is the attitude, moreover, attitude and subjective norm are both primary determinants of Internet one-night stand. This finding indicates that social pressure plays a fundamental role which may result the low proportion of Internet one-night stand participation in Taiwan. This study provides a verification of the TPB’s validity in predicting behavioral intention of online relationships. Furthermore, gender differences and overall opinions about online friendship and Internet one-night stand were explored and discussed in the present research.
