Research on the effectiveness of instructional media used in digital game character modeling

The digitalized and integration of graphic design has recombined people’s spatial visualization ability. Digital games make more subtle observation possible on depiction and construction of role modeling. The purpose of this study is to explore the teaching feasibility and students’ learning effectiveness of applying digital games as the teaching media. Students of the Advertising Design Department are the research subjects. The research methods adopted are experimental observation, questionnaire, discussion with experts and interviews with teachers and students. The teaching arrangement carries out for a semester. The results show that the students of experimental group which is practiced the digital media learning method improve their learning effectiveness significantly in picture composition, shades handling, brightness changing, as well as creativity of character designing. Furthermore, compared to the experimental group that has accurate performance on composition ratio and outstanding creativity of role modeling, the control group shows better performance on shades handling and brightness changing than the experimental group does. Besides, applying both digital role modeling teaching material and traditional physical observation depiction method would be more effective for students on learning painting techniques and expressing creativity than using one of them alone.
