The Attentional Demand during the Taekwondo Kick Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the attentional demand during the roundhouse kick process of Taekwondo by the dual-task design. Twenty-three Taekwondo athletes were recruited to participate in this study. Their average age, height, and body weight were 16.4 ± 0.8 years old, 169.7 ± 5.8 cm, and 61.1 ± 12.2 kg, respectively. Each participant was asked to perform 40 roundhouse kick trials as the primary task, but the simple reaction time test (RT) would be inserted at four probe position randomly that prepare phase (before kick leg takeoff), kicking phase, impact phase, and backward phase of roundhouse kick. Dae do protector scoring system and BioPac MP-150 with 50 G accelerometer (2000 Hz) were used to record the kick force and switch pulse respectively. Repeated measures one way ANOVA showed the kick force with RT at kicking phase was significantly less than simple kick movement. The RT results from fast to slow in sequence were simple RT, at backward phase, at kick phase, and at prepare phase. It indicated that the prepare phase and kick phase were the important duration that a Taekwondo athlete required higher attentional demands to execute the roundhouse kick.
