The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of using Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica)as raw material and pretreated with boiled linseed oil and with melting paraffin, to manufacture a kind of environmental friendly flooring by surface densification method. From the results show that while the pressing plate temperature 200 ℃ was used to compress the pretreated lumber with two steps pressing method to the compression ratio of 40 %. The hardness, MOR and abrasion property of the surface densified wood were improved and their improving effectivenesses were 50-153 %, 80-118 % and 44-88 %, respectively. In addition, the water repellency of surface densified wood also are improved. Based on the findings in this study, it appears that these two types of pretreatments and the two steps compression method can be used to manufacture of environmental friendly soft wood flooring.
