Alpine bird species richness and abundance in Sheishan were collected over a 3-year period and analyzed with 3 weather factors (i.e. mean temperature, mean rainfall and mean wind speed) using multiple linear regression to examine how temporal variation in avian community inhabiting areas above 3,000 m is correlated with 3 of the factors. Monthly species richness showed significant and positive correlation with monthly mean temperature and temporal variation in monthly bird abundance was generally explained by mean temperature as well. The effect of rainfall and wind speed was minor and limited to only a few species in this study. Birds of the same guild showed similarity in their monthly fluctuation pattern but 3 insectivores of the 5 species that had significant correlation with mean temperature reflected a threshold effect of temperature. This might have to do with the physiology of birds but further examination needs to be conducted.
