In recent years, masking tapes are all the rage in Taiwan. They can be easily torn off, cut down, and written on. Moreover, there are various kinds of colors and patterns that make people hard to put down. Therefore, collection of masking tapes became popular. Masking tapes were originally used as a protection for baked painting on automobiles, so they are disposable, and do not easily damage the surface of the item they stick on. Recently, the colorful mt Masking Tapes enjoy stationery-holics’ high praise. They were manufactured by KAMOI masking tape factory, and popularized by a group of artist and a famous Japanese grocery magazine, which started a DIY craze. In addition, mt Masking Tape also designed masking tapes with local features, combined with local colors, ornamentations, and special products, and they held an exhibition of masking tapes in the local area, therefore upgraded the local touring business. Tourism Bureau, MOTC had launched a “Top 10 small tourist towns in Taiwan” competition. The selected towns include Dajia in Taichung, Dasi in Taoyuan, Beitou in Taipei…etc. These towns were chosen to be the most important places for future marketing. They could be a great opportunity to promote the local culture and tourism in Taiwan, attract both domestic and foreign tourists, popularize in-depth travel, and let the tourists experience the beautiful scenery in small towns. As an old Chinese idiom says: the stones of those hills may be used to polish gems. This research uses masking tapes as media, and “Top 10 small tourist towns in Taiwan” as the theme. We adopted literature review and field research to investigate masking tapes, characteristic culture in Taiwan, and the possibilities for developing and applying masking tapes. We analyze local colors, make use of the special cultural landscapes and turn them into masking tape patterns.
