The amount of computer users is highly arised not only at the young people but alos the elderly people. But the usability of input device for elderly users is still less concerned than for the young users by the computer suppliers. This paper focused on the usability of the interface of computer mouse for elderly users, in which three parts of studies were preceded. Firstly, a questionnaire survey to 20 elderly computer users showed that the larger bother on the input device at their usage were the mouse size, the cursor size, and the control of cursor speed. And the one mean t-test also found that the more frequently objects on the computer usage were information searching on web site, email logging, and blog browing. Secondly, an uncomplete balanced experiment was conducted that 24 elderly users tested 27 randomly assigned mouse devices which were combinations of those three largly bothered factors. The ANOVA test showed that the smallest mouse had the largest mean error-clicking (MEC) frequency; also the smallest cursor had the larger MEC than default and larger cursors; the fast cursor had the larger MEC than default and slow cursors. Finally, three designs of adaptive interface for on-line adjustment of cursor size and speed were proposed to those users; and the ANOVA test showed that the click-and-feedback design was the most preferred adaptive interface after a complete balanced experiment. The results suggested that the adjustment of cursor at the size and speed should be clear verified at the screen with one simple mouse click for the elderly computer user.
