The main purpose of the study is to investigate relevant factors affecting the quality of life of oral cancer patients. A cross-sectional study was conducted and the subjects were the patients hospitalized at the Division of Oral Cancer of Chung Shan Medical University Hospital. A total of 50 subjects were enrolled from January 30、2010 to April 15、2010. The main conclusions are as follows: 1. The gender ratio of oral cancer patients is 9: 1 and the average age is 40-59. Most of the patients are the middle age (30/50、60%). As for relevant risk factors、as high as 84.0% of the patients are betel nut chewers、which is consistent with the disease demographics in other relevant studies in Taiwan. 2. This study found that、even for the patients whose disease was identified over the past year、approximately half of them (6/13、46.2%) have already been stage III or stage IV patients、indicating that the lack of awareness of such a disease (oral cancer) is still common in these patients. 3. The difference in the average score between the preoperative and postoperative self-rated health-related quality of life (QOL) is 28.9、indicating that the surgery has severe impact on the health-related QOL of oral cancer patients. 4. The extent of social support provided by family、friends and relatives、and professional medical staff is not positively correlated with the oral cancer patients』 satisfaction with overall QOL、postoperative health-related QOL、and both preoperative and postoperative health-related QOL scores. The research results provide relevant information on the care of oral cancer patients to nursing staff to make them understand the problems and persecution encountered by patients to increase their satisfaction with quality of life.
