Alpinia officinarum is primarily applied to stomach and duodenal ulcer diseases, chronic gastritis, and stomach pain. Recent literature has reported that A. officinarum possesses various physiological activities such as anti-microbes, anti-hepatomas, and anti-oxidants. In the research, we discuss the ability of A. officinarum extracts removing 1, 1 -diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radicals and the effects of A. officinarum extracts on PC12 cell growth. The results show that the 95% ethanol extract of the A. officinarum had the best scavenging capacity of the DPPH free radicals. The effect of facilitating PC12 cell growth was optimum. A. officinarum possesses the application and exploitation for prevention or treatment of neurodegenerative diseases in the food and medicine.
