Using a Wireless Emergent Ringer during Daily Radiotherapy Increasing Patient-reported Confidence of Treatment Safety

Purpose: During daily radiotherapy (RT), on-board treatment safety is an important issue, especially for high-risk patients. In the present study, we aimed to examine the effect of an additional use of a wireless emergent ringer in conjunction with conventionally protective methods during daily RT.Patients and methods: From Jul. 2010 to Dec. 2010, 52 irradiated patients who were at a high risk for encountering emergent accidence were retrospectively recruited. Initially, all patients received conventionally patient-protective methods alone, such as voice and video monitoring, during daily RT. After a few fractions of RT (median, 6; ranged from 5 to 10), a wireless emergent ringer was additionally used. At one week after completion of RT, a questionnaire survey was done for measuring patient-reported confidence of treatment safety during their RT course. For quantitative analysis, the original 5-category nominal scale was transformed into numerical score that ranged from 10 to 1 according to the concept of subjectively visual analogue scale. The transformed score that equal to or more than 8 was considered as a positively meaningful response for according items. Results: There were 33 males and 19 females. Most allocated patients had good performance status, i.e. with an Eastern Cooperative Oncology group (ECOG) performance score of 0-2 (48/52, 92.3%). After a use of a wireless emergent ringer, patient-reported confidence of on-board safety in the RT room was considerably improved, with a rate of 94.2% (49/52; transformed score ≥8).Conclusion: In our study cohort, applying a wireless emergent ringer can effectively increase patient-reported confidence of on-board safety during daily irradiation. A routine use of wireless emergent ringer may be encouraged, especially in high-risk patients.
