In renal failure patients, many complications come from the imbalance of calcium and phosphate, including renal osteodystrophy, vascular calcification, hyperparathyroidism, and refractory pruritus. The most important strategy to prevent this kind of complication is diet control. To achieve good nutrition status, renal failure patients take high protein diet, which may contain a lot of phosphate. Therefore, phosphate control is not an easy task. We always educate our patients to have high physiological protein, and decrease the processed food intake. Meanwhile, we suggest our patients to have phosphate binder when having food at the same time. Phosphate binders will decrease the phosphate absorption from gastrointestinal tract. With continuing diet control and phosphate binders use, we can avoid the notorious complications. Diet control is an effective method to improve patients' life quality and outcomes.
