Dental implant has been developed in different morphology and surface texture to replace the missing tooth in recent years. Due to the great advancement of modern technology, dental implant can mimic single-root natural tooth completely based on the clinical outlook. Nevertheless, there are still many different aspects between tooth and implant such as response to occlusal loading, micro-structure of surrounding tissues, and pathological pathway to infection sources. Whether the dental implant can really take the place of natural tooth and function as well as natural tooth still remains controversial. This article will explore the difference between natural tooth and dental implant from the points of periodontal hard and soft tissues surrounding to further offer the possible treatment modality for clinicians.
