The Maximum Hour College Students Can Work at Per Week: From the Perspective of Coursework Learning

Many undergraduate students in Taiwan worked while in college to sustain their school learning, and yet, some of them seemed to be negatively affected by work and performed poorly in coursework learning. The purpose of this study is to understand empirically the maximum hour per week college students can work at in order not to perform significantly worse than non-working students with regard to coursework learning. For this purpose, seven groups of students working at different length of time were compared on five indicators of coursework learning by an analysis of covariance along with Scheffe post-hoc tests. The participants were a national representative sample of third-year college students who were surveyed by the Center for Research on Educational Evaluation and Development at the National Taiwan Normal University in 2005.The results showed that as compared to nonworking students, students working more than 1 hour per week skipped classes more frequently, students working more than 15 hours per week were more constrained by class time when choosing courses to study, students working more than 20 hours per week used library less often, and finally, students working more than 25 hours per week spent less time studying and were more likely to report having difficulty in completing assignments. Thus, it is suggested that 25 hours per week be the maximum hour college students can work at for the sake of coursework learning.
