論通識教育與公民養成之關係

University General Education as a Way of Cultivation of Citizenship

摘要


這篇論文的主旨在於論證「通識教育」與「公民養成」之間具有不可分割性。也就是說,通識教育是以公民養成作為重要的教育目標,而倡導公民的培養也必須以通識教育為其基礎,兩者如車之兩輪,烏之兩翼,是一種分則兩傷,合則兩利的關係。我們首先在本文第二節析論「通識教育」與「公民培養」之密切關係及其對二十一世紀華人社會的重要性。第三節則針對我們的主張可能引起的兩種疑慮加以分析,指出(一)主張以通識教育培育世界村居民而非民族國家的公民的人,忽略了「全球化」論述的欺瞞性,也未能正視華人社會的特殊性;(二)主張強調公民教育與民主潮流背道而馳的人,實際尚未能深入瞭解公民教育的內容。本文第四節在第三節的基礎上,進一步探討作為通識教育的公民教育之精神在於培養學生之主體意識,使學生可以與其他人文或自然環境進行健康之互動。我們也指出:本於這種教育精神,公民教育課程不宜統一規定,而應寓「一」於「多」,以多元課程啟發學生的公民素養。本文第五節則綜合全文要旨,並提出結論與展望。

The major issue in this paper concerns the inseperability between university general education and the cultivation of citizenship. University general education sets its major goal in civic education, and the cultivation of noble civic spirit must be founded upon the firm rock of general education, the two sections are to each other as wheels to a car or wings to a bird. The second section of this paper deals with the intimate relationship between university general education and civic education as its impact on Chinese-speaking communities in the 21(superscript st) century. The third section analyzes two possible doubts raised against my cardinal arguments and points out that: 1) those who criticize general education will promote a world citizenship instead of a national citizenship fall into the fallacy of the deceptiveness of globalization discourse; this rejection also neglects the uniqueness of Chinese-speaking communities; 2.) those who assume civic education. The fourth section, based upon arguments in the third section, goes on to explore the spirit of civic education as part of university general education. Civic education is to cultivate students' subjective awareness so as to interact with men and Nature. Rooted in this spirit, civic education shall not be designated course syllabi, but rather to cultivate students' citizenship through multi-core curriculum.
