The paper intends to answer the following questions: (1)Since the general education courses initiated in colleges and universities at 1984, what is the performance of general education in Taiwan? (2)Through a series of error and trial, how to improve the quality of general education in the future? The purposes of this paper are to explore the performance of general education since the general education courses initiated in universities at 1984 in Taiwan and to discuss the future of general education through a series of error and trial. Simply, from the perspectives of critique and retrospect, in this paper I discuss the development of general education from the historical aspect, describe the two origins of general education, and indicate the background and purposes of general education in Taiwan. I further discuss the contemporary implication and content of general education from the interaction of ”formal course” and ”hidden course”. The critique and retrospect for the transition of general education focuses on the following five points: 1. the transition of ideology 2. the transition of courses 3. the transition of teacher's quality 4. the transition of student's attitude 5. the transition of general education administration
