摘要

本書《日治下的臺灣殖民教育》，為作者鶴見祐輔在哈佛大學攻讀博士學位的博士論文。有關日本殖民主義的研究不在少數，只是大多著重於日本殖民主義的特質、日本國內的政經情勢、近代日本政經、社會、文化、心理本質的了解，對於日本在亞洲殖民地所面臨的實質上、特定的冒險則似乎有所忽略，因此本書之探究重心，在於進一步探討日本在亞洲各殖民地的實際作為，以及各殖民地間（如高麗、台灣）的比較，以期對日本殖民主義能有更深層的了解，可謂台灣教育史全方位研究中的經典之作，題材面面俱到、鉅細靡遺、架構完整、綱舉目張，更開拓了比較教育、教育政策、課程與教學的新題材。
