This study sought to discover ESL students' learning difficulties in listening. The participants were 51 civil engineering students enrolled in the two-year junior college program at a technical college located in Taipei. Through an analysis and interpretation of the data based on three listening exams the students took during two semesters of a general English course and on a survey conducted at the end of the course, the researchers diagnosed the difficulties that the students encountered in the learning process and identified the factors that could have affected the students learning and performance. The investigation involved two aspects: the cognitive domain and the affective domain. In addition, useful suggestions, theoretical insights, and practical applications in classrooms were provided to teachers of English to help their students to cope with learning difficulties not only in listening but also in learning as a whole.
