A Study of Scientific Literacy in Junior High School-The Issue of the Destructor as Exemplar

摘要

The objective of this study was to explore current Scientific Literacy (i.e. science knowledge, science process skills, and scientific attitudes) of Taiwanese junior high school students by ”Scientific Literacy Quantitative Test on the Issue of the Destructor” made by the author. The population for this Test consisted of a total of 4679 students in 132 classes of 22 junior high schools in Taiwan. According to students' background relating to grade, gender and whether to have the destructor near the school, T-tests or ANOVA were conducted to investigate the differences among individuals. The Chi-square test adopted served as evaluating the differences of viewpoints. Furthermore, Pearson correlation was conducted to examine and analyze Scientific Literacy defined as above. The results of this study were illustrated as follows: 1. Taiwanese junior high school students are average in science knowledge and science process skills, and most of the students hold positive attitudes toward science. 2. The positive correlation of science knowledge, science process skills, and scientific attitudes indicates high standards (p<0.01) 3. Scientific Literacy is primarily related to students' background. The background indicators affecting Scientific Literacy are grade, gender, and whether to have the destructor near the school in order. 4. Taiwanese students tend to perform lower Scientific Literacy in the issues of destructor around their daily environment.
