This paper briefly analyses Joachim Wach's early concept of the study of religion as an autonomous scientific discipline, which he expounded in his important book ”Religionswissenschaft” (1924), and considers its value for today's Religious Studies. Wach established the distinction between the historical and systematic branches of Religionswissenschaft, which is still regarded as a kind of consensus among many contemporary scholars of religion. Another important contribution is his insistence upon the character of Religious Studies as an empirical discipline, not to be confused with theology or philosophy.
