The Relationship between Cultural Literacy and English Ability of University Students in Taiwan

台灣英語系學生的文化常識和英語能力的相關性探討-以立德學生為例

摘要


本研究目的在探討英語系學生文化常識水平和英語聽、說、讀、寫能力之間的相關性。本研究對象為33位英語系學生。研究結果顯示常識的高低和英文單字量和英語口語表達能力有顯著的關係。表示文化常識得分較高的學生其英語口語表達能力也較好。然而英文聽力、閱讀理解能力和英文寫作能力在本研究中無法顯示和文化常識得分之間有顯著相關。本研究顯示英語口語表達能力的好壞和個人具有的文化常識量有關,而且英語口語表達能力佳的學生,其單字量、英文聽力、閱讀和寫作能力也較好。本研究針對結果將建議英語教師應充實學生的文化常識或背景知識和英語能力以期提昇學生的英文口語表達能力。

The present study discusses English majors' English ability and their cultural literacy level. There were 33 participants in the present study. The results of the study show that background knowledge is correlated with one's vocabulary level and speaking ability. This means that those with good speaking ability also have good cultural literacy, while listening comprehension, reading comprehension and writing ability do not significantly correlate with cultural literacy. Second, those with good English speaking ability also perform well in other English areas such as vocabulary range, reading comprehension, writing ability, and listening comprehension. The results show that to achieve communicative efficiency, the speaker should possess sufficient world knowledge. The pedagogical implication of this result suggests that English teachers should strengthen the English learners' world knowledge or cultural literacy and English ability simultaneously to help English learners to achieve communicative efficacy.
